Hydrogen, as a clean secondary energy source and energy carrier, is regarded as a promising solution to alleviate the escalating energy crisis and mitigate environmental pollution, but the efficient and safe storage and transport of hydrogen remain to be a critical bottleneck. The development of solid-state hydrogen storage technology aims to bridge the efficient hydrogen production from water electrolysis and hydrogen utilization in fuel cell applications, which is of key significance in achieving a hydrogen economy. Possessing a hydrogen capacity as high as 18.5 wt%, lithium borohydride (LiBH4) has attracted extensive research attention as a hydrogen storage material. However, the higher thermodynamic stability and reluctant kinetics of LiBH4 constitute a major obstacle for practical applications. Herein, the crystal structure and de/hydrogenation mechanisms of LiBH4 were clarified and various performance optimization strategies were summarized to enhance the comprehensive hydrogen storage property. Based on recent experimental research progress in catalytic doping, nanoconfinement and compositing, innovative ideas and methods are proposed to provide references for further exploring the performance optimization of LiBH4 for hydrogen storage.
